Why donate?
"Why?" is always a fair question to ask when offered to make a donation at a free event. While my primary desire was to make these concerts accessible to anyone, it was also my intention to provide a professional-level concert representing my best work. Normally, one would spend anywhere from $15-50 to see a live classical concert by professional artists.
This particular recital program represents roughly 700 hours of preparation; and while venues have generously allowed me to perform in their spaces for free, there have been plenty of expenses associated with the concert series, including printing programs, fuel costs, sheet music purchases, etc. Much of the preparation and practice for this program took place during 2020 -- a very difficult financial year for artists and freelancers.
To be a concert artist in any capacity is a high privilege, and I count myself blessed to have the opportunity to perform on stages this year. As music is what I do for a living, my hope in allowing donations is that anyone would feel free to give an amount that reflects what the concert was worth to them, personally. But again, I am blessed to be able to offer this concert for free to anyone who would otherwise be deterred by a ticket cost.
